7/6/2023 0 Comments Mauss essay on the giftMauss was not the first to reflect upon this ambivalence. For Mauss the act of giving was inherently ambivalent, at once generous and self-interested. Mauss believed that, in the absence of the state, this practice of gift exchange was a way of binding people together and creating human solidarity though he also showed how in the potlatch, the competitive destruction of goods among the Indians of Northwest America, the practice could take on a more aggressive form. A strict code of reciprocity imposed a threefold obligation: to give, to receive, and to repay. Those gifts purported to be free and voluntary, but were in fact obligatory. 1 In that brief but pregnant sketch, Mauss showed how the people of the South Seas, the Pacific Northwest, and other “archaic” societies transferred many goods and services to each other by gift, rather than by commercial contracts. The idea that human beings are held together by the exchange of gifts is forever associated with the name of Marcel Mauss (1872-1950), nephew of Émile Durkheim and author of Essai sur le don, forme archaïque de l’échange (1925).

7/6/2023 0 Comments Knut hamsun panOnce again, in Victoria, Iselin appears as a character from one of Johannes’s fictional writings. In Even Arntzen’s article, “ Munken Vendt-på sporet av Knut Hamsuns mytiske estetikk,” he considers the characters fantasy figures that arise from Glahns’s mind (Arntzen 1996). In Pan, Hamsun initially introduces Iselin as an amorous nature spirit, a legend that comes alive when the protagonist enters the northern forest. While many scholars focus on Glahn’s and Johannes’s respective troubled relationships with mortal women, they discuss Iselin, a nature spirit, only in respect to Glahn’s relationship with nature and his ideal of a feminine woman. In Victoria, Hamsun writes of Johannes Møller, the son of a miller, who falls in love with the daughter of a landowner, Victoria, who returns his love, but cannot show him her love due to her familial responsibilities. Due to an inability to engage in social interactions as he feels more akin to nature, Glahn cannot properly continue his relationship with Edvarda. In Pan, the male protagonist, Thomas Glahn, meets Edvarda, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, and attempts to consummate his love for her. Knut Hamsun’s novels Pan and Victoria focus on the tragedies of the attainment of love and then its subsequent loss due to the pressures of social conventions and responsibilities. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Faster higher fartherHe describes VWs rise from the peoples car during the Nazi era to one of Germanys most prestigious and important global brands, touted for being green. Nevertheless they head into the woods once more, ascending to the tree house and finding a book about medieval times, with a note about a knight’s quest. Jack and Annie, just back from their dinosaur adventure, are still unsure about where the tree house came from, or who is behind it. What did you like about the book? Purely by coincidence, in the center of one sits Earth. Rays of sunlight (coming from the bottom left) are scattered within the camera's optics across the image, a result of taking the image so close to the Sun. In the original Pale Blue Dot, Earth is a mere 0.12 pixels wide (Jupiter and Saturn are both big enough to fill a pixel in their portraits), and seen as just a crescent of light. Voyager 1 points back towards the Sun taking images that would become the first-ever "family portrait" of our Solar System. When the spacecraft passed the planet in 1980, Sagan proposed the idea of the space probe taking one last picture of Earth. So on Valentine’s Day 1990, beyond Neptune and about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) from the Sun, Voyager 1 snapped 60 images, including portraits of Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and the Sun, resulting in a composite image NASA dubbed the " Family Portrait of the Solar System." Thirty-four minutes later, its cameras would turn off forever. We Just Took A Step Closer To Building The First Nuclear Clocks Second, Raffe and Penryn have A LOT to talk about. OMG. Way, way back in the day, like, six or seven years ago, I emailed her via her website to ask what had happened to the dog in the opening scenes of Minx, as the heroine saves a young boy who ran out into the street after his puppy, and the puppy’s safety isn’t mentioned again. Side story: Quinn is also one of the very first romance authors I ever interacted with personally. One of my favorites is easily one of the top romances I’ve read (That’d be The Duke and I, which if I go near it, it sucks me in and I reread the whole goddam thing no matter how much I have to do). 7/5/2023 0 Comments My great aunt arizonaHe asked a lot of questions about all the unique family trees when he noticed differences from our own.
